I have many of the paperbacks but they are all old and just might fall apart if I tried to read them.
I bought the SFBC versions so I would have copies I could actually read.

I actually was just at B&N and they had both sets. The first one collects Princess, Gods of Mars and Warlord while the second one has Thuvia and Chessmen. I own the second one and it's nice, even though the cover art on both isn't that great (the first one just has a picture of Mars while the second set uses a piece of artwork showing a Flash Gordon like rocket racing towards Mars. I guess whatever sells.) Still if you're looking both are nice and pretty cheap (I think it was around 10 or 12 buck for the first set and 8 or 9 for the second one.)

I was thinking of the epic ( first 3 books ) illustrated by Thomas Yeates. It doesn't so up on their site yet.

I just wrote to Yeates to see when it's coming out.

Very good article and nice illustrations. The first one at the top of the article is in the spirit of the Roy Krenkel/Frazetta Fighting Man of Mars cover for Ace in the 1960's. One of the best in my estimation.

I'm sorry that more illustrators in talking about Burroughs inspired illustrations don't mention Frank Schoonover. I am taken by his original Princess cover and illustrations and the cover for Gods. I wish he had been involved in Warlord as well.

On a side note: No one has written anything that I can find whether or not Schoonover had planned any illustrations to go with the original McClurg editions of Gods besides the cover. Or if there were drawings that never made it into the final edition.

I finally got the Yeates illustrated version and Barnes and Noble for 13 bucks. The drawings were really good-even though some of them reminded me of Flash Gordon (maybe not surpising as Yeates dedicates his work here to Al Williamson.) I would recommend getting it.

Got it here too mcr. I like having the trilogy in hardcover and nicely illustrated too! Highly recommended.
